Troy on capital

Troy works through capital: why running lean by habit can starve a business, what a buyer expects to see in the bank, and how it is measured.

§1 Definition

What capital is

Cash and credit available to invest ahead of returns.

Capital is the money available to invest ahead of the return: cash in the bank, an undrawn line of credit, and the owner’s willingness to use them. It funds the hires, systems, and inventory that growth requires before growth pays for them.

Owners often run lean by habit and starve the business of the working capital a buyer would expect to see. A distributor that cannot stock for a big account, or a contractor that turns down work for lack of bonding capacity, is Capital-constrained.

Use cases

Setting a minimum cash reserve as months of expenses, arranging a credit line before you need it, and separating the cash the business needs from the cash you take home.

The inputs family

What every owner starts with. Inputs are recorded as conditions of the engagement rather than scored against a target; they set the clock and the budget for everything else.

What you start with. Time, talent, capital, and demand. Every other element is built against these four.

§2 Measurement

What the assay measures

Cash on hand plus undrawn credit, expressed in months of operating expense.

Figure 1. Sample assay for Acme Industrial: capital scores 62 today (developing) against a target of 62 (developing). Sample scores, not a client. Your own assay comes from the exit score and the valuation.

How the scale reads

  1. Every element is scored from 0 to 100 against what a sophisticated buyer expects at close.
  2. Risk elements are scored as control: higher is safer.
  3. Inputs are recorded, not targeted.Applies here
  4. Outcomes are derived from their feeding families.

§3 Pathway

The path from capital to enterprise value

Every element feeds a family, and every family feeds an outcome. The chain below is the route this element's score takes into the number a buyer pays.

Figure 3. Capital at A3 in the standard table: column A, row 3. Columns group the families; the wealth series runs beneath.

§4 Position

The inputs series

4 elements share the family. Read them together: a buyer prices them as a group.

§5 Compounds

Capital stands alone

This element is not part of a named compound. It is priced on its own, through the family it belongs to.

§6 In the FNDRS journey

Where capital gets worked

The assay scores it. The process, the pillars, and the platform move it. Table 2 lists every place this element is on the agenda.

§7 In the valuation

What the FNDRS valuation reads for capital

Measured Low to medium leverage

The FNDRS valuation reads this element directly. Its assay score derives from the same answers the engine scores, so the assay and the valuation can never disagree.

What FNDRS reads

Cash reserve and cover for short-term liabilities, in the financial-health report card, with working-capital and debt diagnostics.

The exit score is the first assay: fifteen minutes, six pillars, and a first read on the elements that matter most.
