§1 Definition

What legacy is

What outlasts the transaction: people, brand, community.

Legacy is what outlasts the transaction: the people who keep their jobs, the brand that keeps its name, the community commitments that continue, and the family that inherits the result. For many owners, it is the outcome that matters most and the one least often planned for.

Owners regularly discover during negotiations that the buyer paying the most will also close the local office, rename the company, or release long-tenured staff.

Use cases

Writing down what you want to survive the sale before you begin, weighing buyers against those criteria alongside price, using deal terms to protect employees and brand, and planning your own role and giving after the sale.

The outcomes family

What the owner is building toward. Outcomes are read from the families above them rather than worked on directly.

What you get. The outcomes the other six families produce: enterprise value, optionality, freedom, and legacy.

§2 Measurement

What the assay measures

Documented plans for the people, brand, and community commitments the owner wants to survive the transaction.

Figure 1. Sample assay for Acme Industrial: legacy scores 50 today (developing) against a target of 72 (developing). Sample scores, not a client. Your own assay comes from the exit score and the valuation.

How the scale reads

  1. Every element is scored from 0 to 100 against what a sophisticated buyer expects at close.
  2. Risk elements are scored as control: higher is safer.
  3. Inputs are recorded, not targeted.
  4. Outcomes are derived from their feeding families.Applies here

§3 Matrix

Where the outcomes family stands

Every element of the family plotted by its sample score today against its target. The dashed line is the target itself: the farther a point sits above it, the more lift the assay asks for. Below 50 on either axis is the gap a buyer will price.

  • Hover a quadrant to read what it means for the elements inside it.
  • Points above the dashed line still need lift; a point on the line is at target.

§4 Position

The outcomes series

4 elements share the family. Read them together: a buyer prices them as a group.

§5 Compounds

Legacy stands alone

This element is not part of a named compound. It is priced on its own, through the family it belongs to.

§6 In the FNDRS journey

Where legacy gets worked

The assay scores it. The process, the pillars, and the platform move it. Table 2 lists every place this element is on the agenda.

Figure 4. The route legacy takes: buyers, diligence, and the deal itself set its effect; the FNDRS valuation does not compute it.

§7 In the valuation

Where legacy is priced

Priced by buyers Not modeled

The FNDRS valuation does not compute this element, either by design or because it is not yet measured. Its effect shows up in what a buyer will pay, in diligence, or in the structure of the deal and the proceeds.

What FNDRS reads

Outside the valuation by design.

Weighed in the choice of buyer and in the deal terms, not in the price.
