§1 Definition

What gross margin is

Revenue left after direct costs; the ceiling on everything below it.

Gross Margin is what is left from each dollar of revenue after paying the direct costs of delivering it: materials, subcontractors, and the labor that touches the job. It is the ceiling on everything below it. Overhead, owner pay, and profit all come out of gross margin, so a thin one leaves nothing to work with.

Two $10M businesses can look identical on the top line and be worth very different amounts if one runs at 45% gross margin and the other at 22%.

Use cases

Knowing your gross margin by product line or job type rather than only in total, catching margin erosion early when a key cost rises, and shifting the mix toward the work that earns the most per dollar of revenue.

The earnings family

The economic engine. Earnings elements determine the size of the number a multiple is applied to.

Earnings. The engine. Pricing, margin, growth, overhead, recurring revenue, and retention set the number a buyer multiplies.

§2 Measurement

What the assay measures

Gross margin percentage, its three-year trend, and its position against the industry benchmark.

Figure 1. Sample assay for Acme Industrial: gross margin scores 68 today (developing) against a target of 74 (developing). Sample scores, not a client. Your own assay comes from the exit score and the valuation.

How the scale reads

  1. Every element is scored from 0 to 100 against what a sophisticated buyer expects at close.
  2. Risk elements are scored as control: higher is safer.
  3. Inputs are recorded, not targeted.
  4. Outcomes are derived from their feeding families.

Figure 2. Margin Engine (ME) is the overlap of Gross Margin and Pricing Power: each set is one element, drawn in its family color; the compound is what a buyer finds where they meet.

§3 Venn

How gross margin bonds into margin engine

A compound is two elements a buyer reads as one property. Pricing power held at the gross-margin line. Growth without it is volume, not value. Each circle is one element, scored on its own; the overlap is margin engine, read from the parts together rather than from any one of them.

  • Gross Margin is one of the circles. Its own score comes from the assay; the compound's comes from all 2.
  • Where one circle is weak the overlap shrinks, and with it the price a buyer puts on the whole. Strong pricing power without gross margin is still not margin engine.
  • Hover a circle to read what that element measures, or the centre for the compound itself.

§5 Compounds

What gross margin forms

Compounds are the properties buyers actually price: several elements bonded into one. Each is scored from its parts.

§6 In the FNDRS journey

Where gross margin gets worked

The assay scores it. The process, the pillars, and the platform move it. Table 2 lists every place this element is on the agenda.

§7 In the valuation

How FNDRS tracks gross margin

Tracked Indirect

FNDRS tracks the signals behind this element and reports on them. The element itself does not move the FNDRS number; where it is report-only it never touches the price.

What FNDRS reads

Last year's cost of goods sold and margin sanity checks. Margin lives inside the earnings number itself.

Tracked as part of the earnings figure rather than as a separate lever.
