§1 Definition

What tech/ai automation is

Software and AI doing work that would otherwise need headcount. Margin that scales without hiring.

Tech/AI Automation is the degree to which software and AI do work that would otherwise require people. It covers automated quoting, scheduling, invoicing, reporting, customer communication, and the use of AI in delivery and administration. It raises the multiple because it means revenue can grow without headcount growing at the same pace, and because a buyer sees a business that is already modernized rather than one they will have to modernize.

A distributor whose orders flow from customer portal to warehouse to invoice without manual entry is automated. A firm where three administrators re-key data between systems is not. In 2026, buyers also ask specifically how AI is being used in the business.

Use cases

Mapping your ten most repetitive workflows and automating the top three, using AI tools for proposals, customer service, and financial analysis, tracking revenue per employee against your industry, and documenting what is automated so it is visible in diligence.

The multiple family

Qualities that raise the price a buyer will pay for each dollar of earnings. Multiple elements are where most of the value gap closes.

The multiple. What raises the multiple: clean books, predictability, management depth, a sales engine, proprietary IP, brand, and strategic fit.

§2 Measurement

What the assay measures

Share of repeatable workflows automated, revenue per employee against the industry benchmark, and documented AI or software leverage in delivery, sales, and finance.

Figure 1. Sample assay for Acme Industrial: tech/ai automation scores 36 today (leaking value) against a target of 72 (developing). Sample scores, not a client. Your own assay comes from the exit score and the valuation.

How the scale reads

  1. Every element is scored from 0 to 100 against what a sophisticated buyer expects at close.
  2. Risk elements are scored as control: higher is safer.
  3. Inputs are recorded, not targeted.
  4. Outcomes are derived from their feeding families.

§3 Profile

The multiple family in profile

Today's score for every element in the family, drawn as one shape against the dashed outline of the targets. The shape shows where the family is thin: tech/ai automation is the marked axis.

§4 Position

The multiple series

8 elements share the family. Read them together: a buyer prices them as a group.

§5 Compounds

Tech/AI Automation stands alone

This element is not part of a named compound. It is priced on its own, through the family it belongs to.

§6 In the FNDRS journey

Where tech/ai automation gets worked

The assay scores it. The process, the pillars, and the platform move it. Table 2 lists every place this element is on the agenda.

§7 In the valuation

How FNDRS tracks tech/ai automation

Tracked Indirect

FNDRS tracks the signals behind this element and reports on them. The element itself does not move the FNDRS number; where it is report-only it never touches the price.

What FNDRS reads

Sales analytics, the share of revenue through digital channels, the CRM in use, and the accounting systems. Thin proxies for now.

Tracked through proxies; a candidate for a future intake question.
