Troy on freedom

Troy works through this element as in an FNDRS workshop: what a buyer is really asking, how the score moves, and the first thing to fix.

§1 Definition

What freedom is

A business that runs, and pays, without the owner.

Freedom is a business that runs, and pays, without you. It is measured in hours the business requires of you each week and in the share of income that would continue if you stepped away. It is the outcome the Transfer family produces and what most owners say they wanted when they started.

An owner who can take a month off and return to a business that grew has Freedom whether or not they ever sell.

Use cases

Setting a target for your own weekly hours and the roles you want to keep, measuring how income holds up during planned absences, and treating Freedom as an outcome to build toward rather than a reward that arrives at the closing table.

The outcomes family

What the owner is building toward. Outcomes are read from the families above them rather than worked on directly.

What you get. The outcomes the other six families produce: enterprise value, optionality, freedom, and legacy.

§2 Measurement

What the assay measures

Owner hours per week required by the business, and the share of income that continues in the owner’s absence.

Figure 1. Sample assay for Acme Industrial: freedom scores 38 today (leaking value) against a target of 74 (developing). Sample scores, not a client. Your own assay comes from the exit score and the valuation.

How the scale reads

  1. Every element is scored from 0 to 100 against what a sophisticated buyer expects at close.
  2. Risk elements are scored as control: higher is safer.
  3. Inputs are recorded, not targeted.
  4. Outcomes are derived from their feeding families.Applies here

Figure 2. Reaction pathway into Freedom: the value families feed enterprise value, wealth and enterprise value feed after-tax proceeds, and the owner outcomes are read from those.

§3 Pathway

What feeds freedom

Outcomes are not worked on directly. They are read from the families beneath them, so the chain below runs the other way: from the elements a founder can move to the number they end up with.

Figure 3. Freedom at J3 in the standard table: column J, row 3. Columns group the families; the wealth series runs beneath.

§4 Position

The outcomes series

4 elements share the family. Read them together: a buyer prices them as a group.

§5 Compounds

Freedom stands alone

This element is not part of a named compound. It is priced on its own, through the family it belongs to.

§6 In the FNDRS journey

Where freedom gets worked

The assay scores it. The process, the pillars, and the platform move it. Table 2 lists every place this element is on the agenda.

§7 In the valuation

How FNDRS tracks freedom

Tracked Indirect

FNDRS tracks the signals behind this element and reports on them. The element itself does not move the FNDRS number; where it is report-only it never touches the price.

What FNDRS reads

The owner's hours per week and the owner-dependence report card, which give the owner-operator view of the headline value.

Tracked as an outcome; the elements beneath it are what move the number.
