§1 Definition

What overhead efficiency is

Fixed costs held flat as revenue scales.

Overhead Efficiency is your ability to grow revenue without growing fixed costs at the same rate. Rent, salaried staff, software, insurance, and administration should shrink as a percentage of revenue as the business scales. When they do not, growth adds work without adding profit.

A business that doubles from $6M to $12M and doubles its office staff has gained nothing in efficiency. One that doubles revenue while overhead grows 40% has built leverage a buyer will pay for.

Use cases

Tracking overhead as a percentage of revenue every quarter, questioning each new salaried role against the revenue it supports, and consolidating software and vendor spend annually.

The earnings family

The economic engine. Earnings elements determine the size of the number a multiple is applied to.

Earnings. The engine. Pricing, margin, growth, overhead, recurring revenue, and retention set the number a buyer multiplies.

§2 Measurement

What the assay measures

SG&A as a percentage of revenue, trended against revenue growth.

Figure 1. Sample assay for Acme Industrial: overhead efficiency scores 63 today (developing) against a target of 72 (developing). Sample scores, not a client. Your own assay comes from the exit score and the valuation.

How the scale reads

  1. Every element is scored from 0 to 100 against what a sophisticated buyer expects at close.
  2. Risk elements are scored as control: higher is safer.
  3. Inputs are recorded, not targeted.
  4. Outcomes are derived from their feeding families.

§3 Pathway

The path from overhead efficiency to enterprise value

Every element feeds a family, and every family feeds an outcome. The chain below is the route this element's score takes into the number a buyer pays.

Figure 3. Overhead Efficiency at C3 in the standard table: column C, row 3. Columns group the families; the wealth series runs beneath.

§4 Position

The earnings series

6 elements share the family. Read them together: a buyer prices them as a group.

§5 Compounds

Overhead Efficiency stands alone

This element is not part of a named compound. It is priced on its own, through the family it belongs to.

§6 In the FNDRS journey

Where overhead efficiency gets worked

The assay scores it. The process, the pillars, and the platform move it. Table 2 lists every place this element is on the agenda.

§7 In the valuation

How FNDRS tracks overhead efficiency

Tracked Indirect

FNDRS tracks the signals behind this element and reports on them. The element itself does not move the FNDRS number; where it is report-only it never touches the price.

What FNDRS reads

Last year's operating expenses, as an operating-margin diagnostic only.

Tracked as a diagnostic; the element itself does not move the number.
